Washington State Learning Standards

Welcome to the Castle Rock School District website.  This page will help you learn about our standards, and provide resources and support as we implement them.

There are three major shifts in the new standards for English/Language Arts.
  1. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction text
  2. Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational
  3. Regular practice with complex text and its academic language

Washington State Learning Standards include many other subjects as well.
Mathematics teachers ensure students receive meaningful instruction that promotes reasoning and sense-making, self-efficacy, and an appreciation for the utility and beauty of mathematics.  Our new standards emphasize eight Standards for Mathematical Practice that describe processes, proficiencies, and habits of mind that educators should develop in their students.

Mathematically Proficient Students...
  1. Make sense of problems and preserve in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
