May 8th - 12th 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We still have a handful of students that don’t have an ASB card, your child has to have a ASB card purchased to go on our field trip in June.  They cost $5.00 and can be purchased in the office.  Permission forms have to be in as well for your student to go on the field trip, there is a copy of the permission form in your child’s Friday folder if I haven’t got it yet!  At this point our class has more volunteers then we can actually take.  I will be drawing names next week and let you know in your child’s Friday folder if you were picked or not.

-What we’ve been learning-

We looked closer at the parts of a plant.  Found out what they are, what they do, and why the plants need them.  Our grass surprised us all on Monday and a lot of us have a head full of grassy hair in our planters.

Writing:  We are going to continue to work on extending our writing from 1-2 sentences to 2-3.  We will be focusing on this for the next several weeks as this is a big transition and reviews other skills (upper case first letters, ending marks, sounding words out, etc.) while practicing the new skill of extending our thoughts and words.

Math:  Comparing.  We will compare objects (shorter/taller, bigger/smaller, heavier/lighter) as well as numbers: greater then, less then, and equal to.

-What we will be working on-

We are going to start an author study this week which will carry into the following week.  We will be reading a handful of the author’s book, comparing the books, characters, and themes along with doing several projects with them.  The author is Kevin Henkes.

Writing:  We will be writing about what we find out about the author and his books.  We’ll be comparing them to our own lives and eventually working on a persuading piece as to what book was our favorite and why.

Math:  We are going to start to learn about graphing.  We will also be working with matching our numbers to their word  and number recognition through mystery pictures.
