August, 2017

Dear Castle Rock Intermediate Students and Parents,

As principal of Castle Rock Intermediate, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back to another great year. I look forward to working with each of you and impacting your student(s) in a positive way.

As many of you are aware, there have been multiple changes made to Castle Rock Elementary. The first and foremost, Castle Rock Elementary has now become two schools in one building. Students in grades K-2 will now attend Castle Rock Primary. Their entrance will be located by the cafeteria along Huntington Avenue. Students in grades 3-5 will now attend Castle Rock Intermediate which will operate out of the established office. Each school will have their own principal and office manager. I will serve as the Castle Rock Intermediate School principal while Veronica Heller will serve as the Primary School principal. With that, Mrs. Liz Baker will serve as the Primary School Manager and Mrs. Kristina Higginbotham will serve as the Intermediate School Office Manager.

An additional change we have made is our after school pick up procedure. Guardians will enter the elementary school grounds on the backside of the building from Roake St. Follow the arrows around the parking lot in a circle to pick up your students. You may park momentarily along the designated area to pick up your student(s). Please do not exit your vehicle. There will be an inner lane for through traffic. After students are picked up, the guardian will exit using the inner through lane to enter back on Roake St. If you have a student who attends the primary school along with a student who attends the intermediate, your intermediate student can be picked up at the primary school location. This prevents you as the guardian having to make two stops.

The front parking lot will have no pick up entry from 2:25-2:55 PM. Busses will be lining the front parking lot to pick up students. If you are parked in the front parking lot, exit by 2:25 or you will be stuck in the parking lot until the buses leave at 2:45. The explanation can be found in our handbook which is online along with the map included with this letter.

Another change that will be occurring this year at Castle Rock Intermediate is introducing the team teaching approach. Teachers in grades 3-5 will be team teaching with another colleague within their grade level. An example would be a teacher teaching math and science, while their team teacher teaches english language arts and social studies. We feel that students will benefit from this approach and align teachers with a more intentional content focus.

To stay up to date on information throughout the year, be sure to check our district’s website at www.crschools.org. The Castle Rock Intermediate site can be found under the school tab located at the top of the district’s page. Castle Rock Intermediate will be sharing information through email, facebook, PTO and school messenger as well.

I am honored to serve as the Castle Rock Intermediate Principal. It’s truly a privilege to be apart of a community where parents, teachers and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support both academic and social growth. Please feel free to contact me at 360-501-2910 or at dstarkey@crschools.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

David Starkey, Principal

Castle Rock Intermediate School
