In December, Angelica Velazquez was sworn in as one of Castle Rock School District’s newest at-large board members.

Although she holds a degree in environmental science and biology, Velazquez is no stranger to the education field. She spent her early college years in California as a certified substitute teacher and worked with many schools and youth groups. After all, teaching is the family business – she has two sisters who have been elementary school teachers for over fifty combined years.

While serving on the school board, Velazquez has a clear vision of what she wants to accomplish. Her top priority? Student and staff safety.

“I want to assist faculty to have the tools necessary to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” she stated.

In her free time, Velazquez focuses on supporting veterans in her community and country. She is a member of the Castle Rock American Legion Auxiliary and the Castle Rock/Toutle Veteran of Foreign Wars Honor Guard.

Velazquez has lived in Castle Rock for eight years and appreciates the town’s sense of community.

“I love our close-knit community, its close proximity to the outdoors, and the sense of togetherness among neighbors.”

School board members are locally elected public officials who volunteer their time to help guide their community’s public schools. They are responsible for helping to set the vision, mission, and strategic goals for the district, and help review, revise and adopt policies.
